How does SDG5 relate to local governments? What about the other 17 Sustainable Development Goals? UCLG explains all in a new guide for local leaders.

With the 2030 Agenda due to come into effect in January 2016, it is vital for local and regional governments to have access to information on why the SDGs matter to them.

With this in mind, UCLG has published “The Sustainable Development Goals:what Local Governments Need to Know”, a simple guide to how each of the 17 SDGs relates to the daily work of local and regional governments.

Goal 5 of the 2030 Agenda is "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls". The publication lists the most relevant targets of SDG5 to local governments and highlights the goal's relationship with other international agendas, such as Beijing +20 and Habitat III.

UCLG is committed to communicating the origins, purpose and relevance of the 2030 Agenda to our members. This guide is just the first step in what we hope will be an ongoing dialogue about how local and regional governments can play their part in achieving the SDGs from the bottom up.
