In the framework of the project “Mediterranean CooBEEration: a network for beekeeping, food security and biodiversity”, funded by the European Union, the National beekeeping forum of Lebanon will take place in Beirut on May 5-6, with the title “Development strategies for Lebanese and Mediterranean beekeeping”.
The forum will be organized by FELCOS Umbria, the Mediterranean Beekeeping Federation (APIMED) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) ART Initiative – which are three of the six partners in the project “Mediterranean CooBEEration” – in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of Lebanon. The event has the objective of developing strategies aimed at strengthening the beekeeping sector in Lebanon and in the Mediterranean, in order to contribute to food security and biodiversity of the areas involved by supporting the beekeeping sector.
After an overview of the beekeeping sector in Lebanon and an analysis about the competitiveness of the markets of beekeeping products, the Forum will represent an opportunity to take stock of the research and the scientific work that the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Bologna (DIPSA), the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Food (DISAFA) of the University of Turin and the INAT- Institut National Agronomique de Tunisie - who are also partners in the project “Mediterranean CooBEEration” - are carrying out on the important role played by bees in the defense and promotion of biodiversity.
The Forum will provide a space for discussion and exchange of experiences between Lebanese and Mediterranean beekeepers, but also for political dialogue with national and international institutions, and with international organizations which will attend the event, such as FAO, in order to build an alliance for the defense of bees and the valorization of beekeeping, in the light of its strategic importance in biodiversity protection and food security.
