The Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are pleased to invite delegates to the 2016 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development to their side-event on “Localizing the SDGs: Transforming global goals into local realities”.
As we have learned from the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), if the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development wants to respect its commitments and be truly transformative – an Agenda “of the people, for the people, and by the people” – it needs to be implemented and fully realized at the local level. Therefore, the localization of the new agenda, a process that envisages an effective landing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the community level, will be key to have a concrete and positive impact on people’s lives.
However, the localization process cannot be understood as a mere translation of the global commitments to the local level but rather as a process based on the empowerment of all stakeholders to ensure the agenda is more relevant to people’s needs and aspirations. Local governance stakeholders, including local economic actors, will need to ground the designing, implementation and monitoring of development strategies for the SDGs. This will provide legitimacy to global and national efforts
In this context, the side-event will provide an opportunity to present the activities carried out and the challenges encountered so far by several countries in the localization of the SDGs. The conversation will be flavored with experiences from countries and will further explore the mechanisms and areas where government leaders, the UN, local and regional governments, civil society, practitioners and researchers, can best collaborate on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and have a positive impact on people’s lives to leave no one behind.
If you have any questions regarding the side event, please do not hesitate to contact us for additional details.
